What is the difference between saline and silicone breast implants?

1/18/2018

What is the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Breast Implants? Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure that enhances breast size and shape. One of the most important decisions in this process is choosing between saline and silicone implants. Understanding their differences can help you make the best choice for your body and aesthetic goals.
Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants: Key Differences Both types of implants have unique characteristics. The right choice depends on your preferences, body type, and lifestyle.
1. Composition and Feel
  • Saline Implants: Filled with sterile saltwater after placement. They provide a firmer feel and may have a slightly rippled texture.
  • Silicone Implants: Pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel that mimics natural breast tissue. These implants feel softer and more natural to the touch.
2. Appearance and Natural Look
  • Saline: Can appear less natural, especially in women with less breast tissue, due to the potential for visible rippling.
  • Silicone: Offers a more natural appearance with a smoother contour.
3. Safety Considerations
  • Saline: If ruptured, the body absorbs the saline solution safely, causing an immediate deflation that is easily noticeable.
  • Silicone: A rupture is less obvious since the gel remains within the implant shell, requiring an MRI to detect.
4. Incision Size
  • Saline: Requires a smaller incision since the implant is filled after placement.
  • Silicone: Needs a slightly larger incision due to being pre-filled.
5. Longevity and Durability
  • What lasts longer, silicone or saline implants?
    • Silicone implants generally last longer due to their durable structure and cohesive gel.
    • Both types typically last 10-20 years, but replacement may be needed earlier due to wear or complications.
6. Cost Differences
  • Saline implants tend to be more affordable.
  • Silicone implants are often pricier due to their advanced material and natural feel.
Saline and Silicone Breast Implants: Which One is Right for You? The choice depends on personal preference, body type, and desired outcome. During a consultation, Dr. Austin Hayes will evaluate your anatomy and help you decide.
Is it Better to Get Saline or Silicone Implants? The best choice varies based on:
  • Body Type: Silicone implants are often better for leaner individuals.
  • Desired Look and Feel: If a natural feel is a priority, silicone is preferred.
  • Concern About Rupture: Those worried about silent ruptures may opt for saline.
Do Saline Implants Sag Over Time? Yes, saline implants may sag more than silicone over time due to their fluid composition. Silicone implants provide more structure, reducing the risk of sagging.
What Are the Disadvantages of Silicone Breast Implants? While silicone implants offer a natural look and feel, they have some drawbacks:
  • Higher Cost: More expensive than saline implants.
  • Silent Ruptures: Difficult to detect without imaging.
  • Larger Incision Required: Can lead to a longer healing process.

How long do breast implants last?

1/18/2018

How Long Do Breast Implants Last? Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure that enhances breast size and shape. One of the most common concerns is how long breast implants last and when they might need to be replaced.

Factors Affecting Breast Implant Longevity
While breast implants are designed to be long-lasting, they are not lifetime devices. Various factors influence their lifespan.
1. Implant Type and Material
  • Saline Implants: Typically last 10-15 years but may deflate or rupture earlier.
  • Silicone Implants: Generally last 15-20 years due to their cohesive gel structure.
2. Rupture and Leakage Risks
  • Saline: A rupture is immediately noticeable as the breast deflates.
  • Silicone: A rupture is often silent and requires MRI imaging for detection.
3. Capsular Contracture
  • A condition where scar tissue hardens around the implant, potentially requiring replacement.
  • More common with silicone implants but can occur with both types.
How Do I Know When My Breast Implants Need Replacing?Recognizing the signs of aging implants is essential. Symptoms that may indicate replacement include:
  • Change in Shape or Size: Noticeable asymmetry or deflation.
  • Pain or Discomfort: Could signal rupture or capsular contracture.
  • Rippling or Hardening: Especially with saline implants.
Can Breast Implants Last 30 Years? While rare, some women have implants that last 30 years without complications. However, most surgeons recommend monitoring implants regularly and replacing them if necessary.
At What Age Should Breast Implants Be Removed? There is no set age, but factors like:
  • Natural Aging: Skin elasticity changes over time.
  • Personal Preference: Some women choose removal or replacement after 20+ years.
  • Medical Concerns: Ruptures or complications may require intervention earlier.
What Happens If You Never Replace Breast Implants?Leaving implants in too long can lead to complications such as:
  • Silent Rupture: Undetected silicone gel leakage.
  • Increased Capsular Contracture: Hardening around the implant.
  • Implant Malposition: Sagging or shifting over time.
Saline and Silicone Breast Implants: Understanding Their LifespanBoth implant types require monitoring, but silicone implants generally last longer. Regular check-ups and imaging help ensure their integrity.
What Is the Longest Breast Implants Have Lasted? Some patients report implants lasting 30-40 years, but this is uncommon. Most experts recommend replacement every 10-20 years for optimal safety and aesthetics.
Why Choose Austin Hayes, MD for Breast Implant Replacement?Dr. Austin Hayes is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Portland, OR, specializing in breast augmentation and implant replacement. What is the best age for breast augmentation?

1/18/2018

What is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation? Breast augmentation is a popular procedure for enhancing the size and shape of the breasts. For many women, this decision is an exciting opportunity to boost confidence and achieve a more youthful or balanced appearance. However, determining the best age for breast augmentation can be tricky. Factors like body maturity, health considerations, and lifestyle play a role in making the right choice. This article explores the ideal age range for breast augmentation, factors that influence the decision, and considerations for women of different ages.

What is Breast Augmentation?Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves placing implants (either saline or silicone) into the breast tissue to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. Women opt for this procedure for a variety of reasons, including boosting breast volume after pregnancy, correcting uneven breasts, or simply improving body proportions.
The best age for breast augmentation is not defined by a specific number but rather by factors such as physical health, emotional readiness, and personal goals.

Age Considerations for Breast AugmentationThe best age for breast augmentation depends on several key factors:
  1. Physical Development
    • Under 18: The breasts are still growing, and it's generally advised to wait until full physical development has occurred.
    • 18–35: Most women in this age group have fully matured breasts, making them prime candidates for breast augmentation.
    • 35–50: This age group often seeks breast augmentation to address sagging or volume loss due to pregnancy or aging.
    • 50 and Beyond: While women in their 50s may still be ideal candidates, considerations such as overall health, skin elasticity, and potential risks should be discussed with a surgeon.
Common Concerns at Different AgesIn Your 20s: Is This the Right Time? For women in their 20s, the decision to undergo breast augmentation is often driven by personal desires rather than medical necessity. This age group is often highly body-conscious, making it a popular time to consider breast implants. However, there are some important considerations:
  • Physical Maturity: By the age of 18, most women’s breasts have fully developed, though it is important to confirm that breast tissue growth has stabilized.
  • Psychological Readiness: Women in their 20s may face external pressures, which makes it crucial to be sure that the decision is being made for personal reasons rather than outside influence.
In Your 30s and 40s: Maintaining a Youthful AppearanceWomen in their 30s and 40s often look for breast augmentation to regain the volume lost after pregnancy or to restore a youthful shape. This age range is ideal for those seeking cosmetic enhancement due to life changes:
  • Post-Pregnancy: Pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to significant changes in breast volume and shape. Breast implants can help restore a fuller, youthful look.
  • Skin Elasticity: The skin tends to lose elasticity with age, so women in their 30s and 40s should consider this when planning for breast augmentation.
If you're considering breast augmentation in Portland, near landmarks like Washington Park or The Portland Art Museum, a consultation with Austin Hayes MD is a great way to discuss how your age and lifestyle can impact the procedure.
Over 50: Is It Too Late?Women over 50 can still consider breast augmentation, but there are special considerations:
  • Skin Elasticity: As the skin loses its ability to tighten, women may need a breast lift combined with augmentation to achieve the desired results.
  • Health Factors: Older women must ensure they are in good health and have no conditions that could affect the healing process or surgery outcomes.
  • Breast Implants After 50: What You Should Know: Implants may not feel as natural due to skin changes, and there may be concerns about implant longevity.
Regardless of age, it’s important to understand the risks and recovery process. A consultation with a skilled surgeon like Austin Hayes MD is essential for evaluating your health and setting realistic expectations for the procedure.

Saline and Silicone Breast ImplantsWhen considering breast augmentation, one of the key decisions to make is whether to go for saline or silicone implants. Both options come with their pros and cons, and the choice depends on your body, personal preferences, and the desired outcome.
  1. Saline Implants
    • Pros: Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, which makes them easier to adjust during surgery. They are also generally less expensive than silicone implants.
    • Cons: Saline implants tend to be more prone to rippling and may feel less natural than silicone implants, especially in women with less natural breast tissue.
  2. Silicone Implants
    • Pros: Silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue and are less likely to cause visible rippling. They are the preferred choice for women seeking a more natural look.
    • Cons: Silicone implants are more expensive, and in the past, there were concerns about safety. However, modern silicone implants are considered safe for use.
The decision between saline and silicone implants can be further discussed during your consultation at Austin Hayes MD, where your surgeon will guide you based on your preferences and body type.

What Disqualifies You from Getting Breast Implants? While breast augmentation is a relatively safe procedure, there are a few reasons a woman might be disqualified from getting breast implants, including:
  • Unrealistic Expectations: If a woman has an unrealistic view of the results, a surgeon may recommend therapy to help manage expectations.
  • Health Conditions: Certain health issues such as autoimmune diseases or poorly controlled diabetes may disqualify a candidate from surgery.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It’s recommended to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding are completed before considering breast augmentation, as these factors can affect the results.
It’s always important to consult with an experienced surgeon who can assess your individual situation.

Is There an Optimal Age to Get Breast Implants? While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, the optimal age for breast augmentation typically falls between the ages of 20 and 40. During this time, most women have fully developed physically and are more likely to be emotionally prepared for the procedure.
Women older than 40 may still be good candidates but should be mindful of factors like skin elasticity and overall health.

How Do I Choose the Right Implant Size?

1/18/2018

How Do I Choose the Right Implant Size?
Choosing the right breast implant size is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when considering breast augmentation. It’s about more than just picking a size; it’s about achieving a look that complements your body, enhances your proportions, and aligns with your personal aesthetic goals. This article explores key factors to consider when selecting your breast implant size, common questions related to sizing, and insights on how to make the best decision for your body and lifestyle.
Why Choosing the Right Size is So Important Choosing the right implant size ensures that your results are both natural-looking and balanced with the rest of your body. Implants that are too large or too small may lead to dissatisfaction, while the perfect size will enhance your confidence and make you feel more like yourself. Here are some important considerations when determining the right implant size:
  1. Your Body Type and Frame
    • Larger implants may overwhelm a petite frame, while smaller implants might not achieve the desired results for someone with a larger body frame.
  2. Lifestyle and Activity Level
    • If you’re highly active or participate in sports, you may want to choose an implant size that won’t interfere with your physical activities.
  3. Your Desired Look
    • Are you looking for a more natural enhancement or something more dramatic? Understanding the look you want will help guide your decision.
Common Questions About Breast Implant Sizes What Cup Size is a 350 cc Breast Implant? One of the most common questions women have is about cc (cubic centimeters) and how it translates into a cup size. While every woman’s body is different, on average:
  • A 350 cc implant typically results in a C cup.
  • Keep in mind, cup size can vary depending on your natural breast tissue and body shape.
It’s important to note that cup sizes are not a universal standard, and the same implant size can look different on different women.
How Many cc is a Size D Cup?The D cup is often associated with larger implants, but the exact cc size can vary. On average:
  • A D cup may be around 400-500 cc, but it depends on your natural breast size and desired outcome.
  • Every woman’s perception of a D cup is different, and it’s important to discuss these details with your surgeon to find the best fit for you.

Choosing Breast Implant Size: A Matter of Aesthetics When it comes to selecting the right implant size, aesthetics play a crucial role. It's about finding the right balance between your desires and what works with your body. Consider the following factors:
  1. Your Natural Breast Tissue
    • Women with more natural breast tissue may opt for slightly smaller implants, while women with less natural tissue may need larger implants for the desired fullness.
  2. Skin Elasticity
    • If your skin has lost elasticity, you may require implants that are slightly smaller or a breast lift in addition to augmentation.
  3. Desired Projection
    • The projection of the implant refers to how far the implant will extend from your chest. This can be adjusted in your decision to achieve a more subtle or more pronounced appearance.
Saline and Silicone Breast Implants When choosing your breast implant size, one of the most important decisions is whether to choose saline or silicone implants. Each option has its unique benefits and considerations:
Saline Implants
  • Pros: Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, which makes them adjustable during surgery. They tend to be less expensive than silicone implants.
  • Cons: Saline implants can sometimes feel less natural, especially in women with minimal natural breast tissue. They also have a higher likelihood of visible rippling.
Silicone Implants
  • Pros: Silicone implants offer a more natural feel and appearance because the silicone gel mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. They are a popular choice for women seeking a more natural look.
  • Cons: Silicone implants are generally more expensive and require a slightly larger incision to insert.
Factors That Affect Implant Size Choices1. Your Breast Anatomy Your natural breast size, shape, and tissue density can all affect how an implant will look. For example, women with smaller, less dense breasts may require larger implants to achieve the desired look. Women with a larger chest may choose smaller implants for a more subtle change.
2. Desired Fullness and Shape Consider whether you want a natural look with a gradual slope or a fuller, more rounded appearance. Different implant shapes, such as round or teardrop-shaped, can also impact the look of the final result.
3. Activity Level and Lifestyle If you are active in sports or physical activities, you may want to select an implant size that allows for easier movement and comfort. A larger implant can feel heavy or restrictive, especially for women who engage in high-impact activities.
4. The Look of the Implants Once They "Drop"A common concern for women is whether implants will look too big or too small once they "drop." This is a normal part of the healing process. Immediately after surgery, implants may appear higher and more pronounced. However, they will eventually settle into a more natural position as your body heals, and they will "drop" into a lower, more natural position.

What is the Most Popular Cup Size for Breast Implants? The most popular implant size varies by person, but in general, the C cup is the most requested size for breast augmentation. This size tends to provide a natural, balanced look while adding fullness and volume to the breasts. However, some women may prefer a D cup or even a B cup, depending on their personal goals and body shape.
When considering your ideal cup size, think about your current breast size, how much volume you want to add, and the overall shape you hope to achieve.

Do Breast Implants Feel Natural?

1/18/2018

Do Breast Implants Feel Natural? One of the most common concerns women have when considering breast augmentation is whether breast implants will feel natural. While breast implants can enhance the shape, size, and overall appearance of the breasts, it's essential to understand how they may feel both to the woman who has them and to others. The decision to undergo breast augmentation is deeply personal, and understanding how the implants will feel is key to making an informed choice.

Understanding Breast Implants and Natural Feel When it comes to breast implants, there are a few factors that contribute to how natural they will feel. These include the type of implant used, the placement of the implant, and your body’s natural tissue. Here are some key aspects to consider:
  1. Type of Implant
    • Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution, while silicone implants are filled with a gel that mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.
    • Generally, silicone implants are known for providing a more natural feel because the silicone gel more closely resembles the consistency of breast tissue.
  2. Implant Placement
    • Implants can be placed either above or below the muscle, and this placement impacts how the breast feels after surgery.
    • Under the muscle placement tends to give a more natural feel since the muscle helps cushion the implant.
  3. Amount of Breast Tissue
    • Women with more natural breast tissue may find that their implants feel more natural compared to women with less tissue.
Saline and Silicone Breast Implants Choosing between saline and silicone implants is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make. Both types of implants offer unique benefits, but the feeling of silicone implants is generally considered more natural.
Saline Implants
  • Pros: Saline implants are adjustable during surgery and can be filled to the desired size. They are also less expensive than silicone implants.
  • Cons: Some women report that saline implants feel firmer or less natural than silicone. They can also develop visible ripples in some cases.
Silicone Implants
  • Pros: Silicone implants are considered the more natural-feeling option, offering a soft, lifelike feel that closely mimics natural breast tissue. Many women prefer silicone for its more natural texture.
  • Cons: Silicone implants generally cost more than saline implants and require a larger incision for placement.
Can You Still Feel Pleasure After Breast Implants?A common question that arises after breast augmentation is whether breast implants will impact sexual pleasure or sensitivity. For most women, the answer is no.
  • While some women may experience temporary changes in nipple sensitivity, sexual pleasure typically returns to normal as the body heals.
  • Some women report that silicone implants, with their soft, gel-like consistency, feel more natural and have less impact on sensitivity than saline implants.
What Makes a Boob Job Look Natural? When it comes to achieving a natural look, the goal is often to enhance the breasts without making them look obviously altered. Here are some tips to ensure that your breast augmentation appears natural:
  1. Proportional Size
    • Choose an implant size that is proportional to your body and frame. Too large of an implant may appear unnatural, while a moderate size will likely blend better with your existing body.
  2. Silicone Implants
    • For a natural feel, silicone implants are generally recommended. They provide a soft, natural texture that resembles natural breast tissue.
  3. Implant Placement
    • As mentioned earlier, placing implants under the muscle rather than above can help create a more natural appearance, especially for women with less natural breast tissue.
  4. Gradual Enhancement
    • Choosing an implant size that enhances your natural breast shape gradually, rather than dramatically increasing the size, can help avoid an unnatural look.
What About the Regret Rate for Breast Implants? Many women wonder if they will regret their decision to get breast implants. The regret rate for breast implants varies depending on factors such as implant size, type, and the surgeon’s skill. Studies suggest that the regret rate for breast augmentation is relatively low, with the majority of women satisfied with their results.
  • However, some women may experience regret if their implant size doesn’t meet their expectations or if they have complications. To reduce the risk of regret, it’s essential to carefully consider your goals and consult with a qualified surgeon.
Can Guys Tell if You Have Breast Implants? One of the most common concerns women have is whether breast implants will be obvious to others, particularly men. The truth is, if done properly, breast implants can be discreet and natural-looking.
  • Silicone implants tend to be less detectable than saline ones, especially when placed under the muscle.
  • Proper sizing and placement ensure that the implants will not be obvious, and the overall result can look like a natural enhancement.
Do Men Prefer Breast Implants or Natural Breasts? There’s no universal answer to this question, as men’s preferences vary widely. However, studies have shown that many men find natural breasts more attractive than augmented ones. That being said, natural-feeling implants can also be desirable to many.
  • The goal is to choose the option that makes you feel most confident and comfortable with your body. Whether you opt for a natural look or a more dramatic change, your personal satisfaction is what matters most.

Local Attractions in Portland During Recovery If you are recovering from breast augmentation in Portland, there are several local spots you can visit while taking it easy:
  • Washington Park: A peaceful and beautiful park located just a few miles from downtown Portland, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
  • Voodoo Doughnut: If you’re craving a treat, Voodoo Doughnut offers a fun and quirky experience just around the corner from the Pearl District.
  • Portland Japanese Garden: Located in Washington Park, this garden is a serene spot to relax and heal with its tranquil atmosphere.
The feeling of breast implants can vary depending on factors such as implant type, placement, and your body’s natural tissue. For many women, silicone implants provide the most natural feel, closely mimicking the soft consistency of breast tissue. By considering your body type, desired results, and lifestyle, you can achieve the natural look and feel you desire.

Things to do in Portland OR

1/4/2018

Portland is the largest city in Oregon, and it is one of the major ports in the Pacific Northwest. The city has earned a reputation for being environmentally responsible; it is highly walkable with a good public transportation system. It also has over 10,000 acres’ worth of public parks. While the summers are warm and dry, winters tend to be cool and rainy.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) began life as the City Hall Museum in 1896. In the 1940s, it became the OMSI. It also became the first entity in the Pacific Northwest to have a public planetarium. The OMSI is now considered one of the top science centers in the United States. In addition to a planetarium, it boasts a retired Navy submarine, a movie theater with a four-story screen, several interactive labs, and a Science Playground for children six and under.

The Oregon Zoo, which was established in 1888, is the oldest zoo west of the Mississippi. It has 2200 animals representing over 260 species spread over 64 acres of parkland. The animals are divided into five areas representing specific habitats like forests or an African savannah. The zoo’s best-known attraction is probably its herd of Asian elephants that includes the “toddler” Lily, who was born in 2012. Every year, the Zoo holds a winter festival called ZooLights that runs from the day after Thanksgiving to early January.

The Portland Art Museum, which was founded in 1892, is the seventh oldest art museum in the US, and the oldest art museum on the West Coast. It is also one of the largest art museums in the nation; its permanent collection includes over 42,000 works of art. Nearly half of that collection is devoted to graphic arts like posters and prints that span a 500-year period. The museum also houses Native American art, Asian art, and photographs. The Northwest Film Center, which is located within the museum, both shows movies and offers classes about filmmaking, animation, and screenwriting.

Powell’s City of Books, which occupies an entire city block and contains over a million books, is said to be the world’s largest bookstore. The books are divided into 3500 categories, so there is something for everybody. It includes a Rare Book room filled with signed first editions and other collectibles. The Basil Hallward Gallery, which is located upstairs, is home to various art exhibits and events like children’s story times, book clubs, and talks.

The Portland Jazz Festival takes place every February to honor Black History Month. The 2018 iteration will run February 15 – 25. Over 100 events will take place during those eleven days. They will include performances by established musicians and up-and-coming youngsters; some performers will be locals, and others will come from around the world. There will be homages to icons like Cole Porter. There will also be at least one event honoring Geri Allen, a jazz composer and pianist who died from cancer this past summer.
