What is included in a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, performed by Portland plastic surgeon Dr. Austin Hayes, uses a scar that is placed in the bikini line to rejuvenate your abdomen. How long will my scar be and what will it look like?

The length of your scar depends on how much excess skin is being removed. A typical incision runs from hipbone to hipbone, but for larger amounts of skin Dr. Hayes will extend the incision further out onto your hips. This is called an extended tummy tuck and you shouldn't be afraid of a longer scar if it's truly needed.

It's important to know that scar length is important, but scar POSITION is critical! Scars that are too high, will show outside of clothing or a bathing suit. Even a long scar that is kept low will be inconspicuous and will still allow you to wear most types of clothing.

How does Dr. Hayes keep the scar so low?

It starts with careful marking before the procedure. Dr. Hayes marks his incision only 2 inches above the groin area (labia). When closing the incision he uses progressive tension sutures to hold the skin in place so that there is no tension on your healing incision. Less tension equals thin scars that stay low on your tummy. Progressive tension sutures also help your drains come out sooner, exactly like a drainless tummy tuck.
