A tummy tuck, performed by Portland plastic surgeon Dr. Austin Hayes, uses a scar that is placed in the bikini line to rejuvenate your abdomen. Dr. Hayes performs a muscle repair to flatten your tummy and create in internal corset. Imagine wearing a waist trainer 24/7! He then removes excess skin and performs liposuction of your waist and love handles. The final result is a more slim and toned appearing tummy with an hourglass shape. How long will my scar be and what will it look like? The length of your scar depends on how much excess skin is being removed. A typical incision runs from hipbone to hipbone, but for larger amounts of skin Dr. Hayes will extend the incision further out onto your hips. This is called an extended tummy tuck and you shouldn't be afraid of a longer scar if it's truly needed. It's important to know that scar length is important, but scar POSITION is critical! Scars that are too high, will show outside of clothing or a bathing suit. Even a long scar that is kept low will be inconspicuous and will still allow you to wear most types of clothing. How does Dr. Hayes keep the scar so low? It starts with careful marking before the procedure. Dr. Hayes marks his incision only 2 inches above the groin area (labia). When closing the incision he uses progressive tension sutures to hold the skin in place so that there is no tension on your healing incision. Less tension equals thin scars that stay low on your tummy. Progressive tension sutures also help your drains come out sooner, exactly like a drainless tummy tuck. Does scarring from a tummy tuck go away? Any scar on the body will stay throughout your lifetime. It doesn't go away, but the position and appearance of your scar can be improved by careful surgical technique. Choose your board-certified plastic surgeon carefully. How do I find the best tummy tuck surgeon in Portland? Make sure that your surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Your surgeon should take the time to listen to your goals and learn about your overall health. They should fully explain the procedures and the rationale behind their recommendations. You should leave the office with a full understanding of the benefits and risks of the procedures that you're considering. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Hayes, check out our contact page.
