Make sure your plastic surgeon is board-certified.

Getting great results after cosmetic plastic surgery means finding a board-certified plastic surgeon, or facial plastic surgeon.

Make sure you take your time finding the right doctor to perform your plastic surgery procedure. Doing your research can make a big difference regarding your results and your experience with the entire process.

Consider several consultations with experienced surgeons. Read their reviews carefully and look at their photo gallery. During the consult you should feel that your surgeon has taken enough time to thoroughly explain your anatomy, your goals, and the specific surgical procedures that they are recommending. You should never feel rushed. Don't be subjected to a "five-minute consult" where the surgeon steps in to the room for a quick look and then leaves. Giving you the best care starts from the minute you walk in the office door, until your last office visit.

Your surgeon should be board certified. Selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon means that your surgeon has undergone rigorous training. They should be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and ideally a member of the American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). Do your homework. There are many surgeons who try to make it appear as if they are certified, but in reality they have not received formal training in plastic surgery.

ASPS member surgeons meet rigorous standards. Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery® (ABPS) means that you surgeon has:
  • Graduated from an accredited medical school
  • Completed at least six years of surgical training with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery residency training
  • Passed rigorous oral and written exams
  • Only performs surgery in accredited, state-licensed and properly certified surgical facilities
  • Do not be confused by other official-sounding certifications
